Want to get out of town? The alternately sun-dappled and rain-soaked jaunt breezily chronicled in Costa Rican filmmaker Paz Fábrega’s Viaje will indulge your romantic yearnings to hit the road with a cute stranger and see just where things can go over the course of a single weekend.
Luciana meets Pedro at a costume party. He shamelessly makes a play for her, despite the fact that he’s wearing a floppy eared bear suit. Luciana is sufficiently wooed and ready to indulge in a cheerful, hassle-free hook-up. When she subsequently learns that Pedro is an environmental student about to embark on a project in Costa Rica’s gorgeous Rincón de la Vieja National Park, Luciana throws caution to the wind and opts to tag along. The two set out and get to know each other. And as Luciana gradually reveals more and more about her life and her plans, she discovers she has a lot more to consider than she thought.
Sweet, wistful and buoyed by two enormously charming young leads, Viaje elegantly conveys how a deeper connection can arise from the most seemingly casual circumstances. And with this, her second feature, Fábrega establishes herself as another smart, confident voice from Central America’s new wave. – Jaie Laplante
