The year is 1971. Delphine (Izïa Higelin) works at her family farm in the Limousin region of France. She decides to make a big leap and enrolls in university in Paris. It is there that she meets Carole (Cécile de France), a beautiful young Spanish teacher and the leader of a militant feminist group. The women hit it off and fall passionately in love. Delphine and Carole are galvanized by their romance… until Delphine gets the news that her father has suffered a stroke, forcing her to move back home to help her family with the arduous work of maintaining the farm. Unable to find some way of letting her old life and new love coexist in harmony, Delphine must eventually choose between the dictates of her family and those of her heart.

Catherine Corsini’s latest feature is infused with a powerful sense of emotional discovery and the disorientation of clashing loyalties. Summertime sensitively examines the trials of upholding a love that is not accepted by one’s community and the difficulty of redefining gender roles during an era in which feminism was still considered by some to be a fad. A moving romance—and a sobering reminder that change often comes with a heavy price. – Andres Castillo
