David (Maxim Gaudette), a charismatic, highly emotional young Quebecois man, and the youngest of five siblings, is shattered by the news of his father’s unexpected death. His older siblings, aware of David’s sensitivities, agree to keep a certain truth away from David: the fact that their father’s early demise was the result of his suicide.
Years later David is married and has two children of his own, forming an especially close bond with his daughter Laurence. When David finally learns the truth about his father’s death, the feelings of loss and overwhelming sadness that his fragile psyche has been battling begin to take on a new context. Little by little David’s darker side starts taking control of him, an inherited legacy that will soon begin a noticeable impact on Laurence’s young life.
Young French-Canadian auteur Anne Émond’s follow-up to her stunning debut Nuit #1 skillfully examines the intricacies of a family afflicted with depression over more that two decades and three generations. Sensitive, smart and immensely observant, Our Loved Ones captures the hardships of a man struggling to escape his own fraught legacy, not only for his own sake, but for that of those he cherishes most – his loved ones. – Andres Castillo
