Tzvia, a dutiful young Orthodox wife and mother of four children, is increasingly feeling more like a housekeeper than a spouse to her preoccupied scholar husband. Living in an isolated house on the grounds of Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives, the site of an ancient Jewish cemetery and a pilgrimage destination for Christians, Tzvia’s sole source of social interaction is with the male Palestinan groundskeeper, with whom she is civil while maintaining a cool distance, mindful of outside perceptions.

On one of her insomniac late-night walks, Tzvia is shocked to discover that the Mount is also a hotbed of sex work and drug deals. Rather than raise the alarm to her husband, Tzvia instead keeps her knowledge of this secret world to herself, and returns night after night to develop tentative relationships with some of the women and the pimps that oversee their transactions. Tzvia’s fascination hints not only at her urgent need for human contact, but also at her own mountain of repressed sexual desire. And as Tzvia’s very unorthodox new relationships continue, she contemplates her position within her cloistered, rigid world of family and faith. – Jaie Laplante
