“If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans,” Woody Allen once said. But for fellow New Yorker, Maggie (Greta Gerwig), making plans is no laughing matter. Her biological clock is ticking more assertively every day, and with no viable mate in sight, it’s high time to figure out the whole solo-motherhood question. Then she meets John (Ethan Hawke) and is smitten. More complicated: John is married to Georgette (Oscar winner Julianne Moore in an exotic, hugely enjoyable supporting role), although that marriage is in dire straits. What is a modern woman to do? Egged on by friends Tony (Bill Hader) and Felicia (Maya Rudolph), Maggie feels her way through a brilliant new plan. And when that plan yields an unsatisfactory result, Maggie just comes up with another, even more knotted plan—one surely destined to unravel.

In this sharp new comedy from Rebecca Miller (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee), fate has the upper hand on even the best-laid plans. Gerwig is a revelation: Maggie is easily her best role to date, and she makes the most of it, deftly capturing the character’s comic swings from hubris to humility. For those who find themselves chronically carried off into undreamt-of directions, Maggie’s Plan is your film. – Jaie Laplante
