Lorenzo Vigas’ feature debut examines the struggles of a man petrified by the notion of human contact and torn between social classes that rarely intermingle.
Armando (Alfredo Castro) is a well-off denture-maker in Caracas. He mixes in a middle-class neighborhood where his money gives him access to young men whom he invites over to his home, offering remuneration in exchange for unusual favors, but that will never involve Armando’s touch. Things take unexpected turns when Armando’s long-estranged father returns to Caracas, stirring up troubling memories. Armando finds himself drawn to spending more time with one of his young men in particular, Elder (Luis Silva). A somber, strange relationship begins to blossom.
From Afar won the Golden Lion at last year’s Venice Film Festival, and Castro, already so impressive in films like Tony Manero, No and The Club, won the Best Actor award in Thessaloniki for what is arguably his richest performance yet. – Andres Castillo
This film is also a part of Jordan Alexander Ressler Screenwriting Competition.
