Having returned from Afghanistan afflicted with PTSD and facing a dearth of employment options, ex-soldier Vincent (Matthias Schoenaerts), accepts a job as a bodyguard for Jessie (Diane Kruger), the wife of a wealthy Lebanese businessman residing in a Côte d’Azur luxury villa. Still at war in his mind, Vincent begins developing unexpected feelings towards the mysterious woman under his watch—and becomes increasingly convinced that a threat is lurking somewhere nearby.
With Augustine, her first feature as director, Alice Winocour crafted an elegant period piece that seemed pitched strictly as arthouse fare. Disorder, however, an atmospheric thriller tailored to fit its charismatic international stars—the Grace-Kelly-like Kruger, star of FX’s The Bridge, and Belgian heartthrob Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone, The Danish Girl)—targets a much wider audience.
But don’t be fooled: Disorder is much more satisfying than a popcorn movie. Rather, the intrigue and special allure of this sexually charged suspense film draws something from Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Melville’s Le Samurai and Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs, and adds to this exquisite mix the will and wit of a female director determined to conquer a genre that has thus far been the domain of her male colleagues. Winocour’s sensibility is refreshing—and Disorder will leave you wanting more of it. – Orlando Rojas
