In mid-1990s Buenos Aires, 16-year-old Cielo Latini (Eugenia Suárez) turns to the alluring novelty of the internet as a relief valve from the peculiar pressures of high school. In keeping with her gloomy adolescent worldview, Cielo adopts the self-depreciating web moniker of “Abzurdah”.

Engaging in an online chat room, Cielo becomes drawn to someone identifying himself as “Hogweed”, and the two arrange to meet in the real world. Cielo is entranced by the handsome and exciting Hogweed, whose actual name is Alejo, and who is ten years Cielo’s senior. Alejo’s interest in Cielo is mainly sexual, and as soon as he gets what he wants he turns disinterested and cruel. But Alejo has become Cielo’s cielo—her sky, her everything—and her despair over his cruelty manifests in eating disorders that threaten to destroy her.

Based on the real Latini’s controversial best-selling memoir, Daniela Goggi‘s second feature was an explosive hit last year in Argentina, out-grossing all domestic films outside of Pablo Trapero’s true-crime juggernaut The Clan. Young Suárez is astonishing, revealing a complex web of precarious vulnerabilities and a fervent desire to connect in a real way with a larger world—though her grip on reality loosens as she slips ever deeper into her terrifying disorder. – Jaie Laplante
