Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (playing at the Festival in this year’s Knight Documentary Achievement Award category) takes an unflinching, unprecedented look at Robert Mapplethorpe’s controversial photography, which pushed boundaries with its frank depiction of nudity, sexuality and fetishism, igniting a culture war that rages to this day.  Drawing upon archival materials and featuring never-before-seen photographs and footage, directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (HBO’s Party Monster, The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Wishful Drinking) offer a revealing portrait of one of the most important artists of the 20the century in the first feature-length documentary about the artist since his death, and the most comprehensive film on Mapplethorpe ever.

Presented on a scale worthy of its artistic impact, this installation features larger-than-life projections, a stunning array of famous and more personal works, and rare, revealing commentary from Robert Mapplethorpe himself. Commencing its tour at Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival in celebration of the film’s Florida premiere, this immersive installation enables guests to experience first-hand the magnitude of Mapplethorpe’s legacy.
