In partnership with SOBEWFF®, the Festival is pleased to present a gourmet fusion of food and film!  Join us on the Americana Lawn at the Loews Miami Beach hotel for a screening of the 1992 Mexican classic film Like Water for Chocolate (Como agua para chocolate), followed by a discussion with screenwriter Laura Esquivel – who also happens to be the author of the original novel from which the film was based!

The film’s history is connected to the Festival’s, in that Like Water for Chocolate was the Closing Night Film of the 10th anniversary Festival and was presented at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts on the incredibly romantic day of Sunday, February 14, 1993.

Nearly 25 years after its initial release, the film is still heralded for its lush magic realism and deeply sensory approach to the intertwinement of love, life and food – specifically, classic Mexican dishes with “a lot of quail, garlic, honey, chiles, mole, cilantro, rose petals, and corn meal,” as the late critic Roger Ebert recalls.   The film swept the Mexican Academy Awards in 1993, winning 11 awards including Best Picture.  For several years, it was the highest-grossing Spanish language film in U.S. box office history.

Esquivel will participate in a conversation about the impact and continued legacy of the film, moderated by Festival Director Jaie Laplante, following the screening.  This film is not recommended for those under the age of 17.

The film screening and conversation are open to the public, but seating is limited.  In order to manage event capacity, we ask that you please reserve your complimentary print-at-home tickets in advance for this event.   Please bring your ticket with you for entrance to the screening.

Seating is limited, and is first-come, first-served.

Upgrade your screening experience by attending a SOBEWFF® post-screening dinner hosted by Rick Bayless. Purchase tickets here.
